Sump Pumps for the Crawl Space
The pump that lifts collected water out from under your house.
What a Crawl Space Sump Pump Is and When It Is the Right Call
When is a sump pump the right call? When water is entering the crawl space as liquid and there is no lower point for it to drain to by gravity. On a sloped lot a drain can sometimes run to daylight, but most crawl spaces here are close to grade on all sides, so the water has to be lifted. A sump pump is not the answer to a crawl space that is humid but dry underfoot. That is a vapor problem for the barrier, sealed vents and dehumidifier.
How does the system work in practice? The basin is a perforated container set in gravel at the low point, so water reaches it from the drain pipe and from the surrounding soil. A float rises with the water and switches the pump on at a set height, and the pump runs until the float drops. The discharge line runs up through the crawl space wall and out to a point where the water will not return to the foundation. A check valve just above the pump keeps water in the line from running back when the pump stops.
What about the battery backup? Power outages and heavy rain often arrive together, and a pump with no power does nothing. A battery backup pump sits in the same basin and takes over when the main pump loses power or fails. It is optional. If your crawl space takes on a lot of water, or outages are common where you live, it is worth having. If the crawl space is only occasionally wet, a standard pump may be enough.
What should you expect? The basin is set and the pump installed and tested by pouring water in before the drain is covered. Once the vapor barrier is down, the barrier is sealed to the basin lid, and the lid is the only access. Expect to lift the lid and test the pump a couple of times a year by adding water, and expect the pump to wear out and need replacing eventually.
How We Install a Crawl Space Sump Pump
Choose the basin location
The basin goes at the low point of the crawl space so the drain can slope to it by gravity. We also look for a wall nearby where the discharge line can exit and a discharge point outside where water will not run back toward the foundation.
Set the basin in gravel
A pit is dug and the perforated basin is bedded in washed gravel so water can enter from the drain pipe and from the soil around it. The rim is set so the vapor barrier can be sealed to the lid afterward.
Install the pump and check valve
The pump is set on a firm base inside the basin so it does not pull in grit, and a check valve is fitted in the discharge line just above it. The float is set so the pump switches on before water reaches the level of the drain pipe.
Run the discharge line outside
Rigid pipe carries the water up and out through the foundation wall to a discharge point away from the house. The penetration through the wall is sealed so it does not become an air or pest entry.
Add battery backup if chosen
Where a backup is chosen, a second pump and its battery are installed so the backup takes over when the main pump loses power or fails. The battery is placed where it stays dry and can be reached for replacement.
Test and seal the lid
We run water into the basin until the pump cycles and check the discharge outside. Once the drain is complete the vapor barrier is laid and sealed to the basin lid, and the lid stays removable for service.
A Local, Family Owned Team in South Hill
Rozier is a family owned, faith-driven company based in South Hill. Because moisture is what invites termites and rodents in the first place, real prevention starts below the surface.
We treat the infestation and correct the moisture conditions that caused it, instead of handing you to a second contractor.
Each home we visit is assessed through a pest lens and a moisture lens, because underneath a house they are the same problem.
We do not arrive with a predetermined treatment and a timer running. What we propose follows from what we find.
Children, pets and sensitive family members are part of the decision about what gets used and how it is applied.
