What this symptom means

Hollow Sounding Wood: Diagnosed and Explained

You tap a baseboard, a door frame or a window sill and it sounds different from the wood beside it. Thinner. Papery. Sometimes a vacuum cleaner bumps a baseboard and breaks through, or a screwdriver pressed against a joist in the crawl space sinks in with almost no effort. The surface may look fine. The paint is intact, the wood is the right color, and nothing about it says damage until you touch it.

That is what makes a hollow sound worth taking seriously. Subterranean termites feed from the inside out. They eat the softer wood along the grain and leave the harder layers and the painted surface as a shell, so the outside of a board can look normal while most of the inside is gone. Carpenter ants excavate wood in a different way and for a different reason. Wood rot, caused by fungus and moisture, softens wood without any insect at all. Each one leaves a different pattern once you open the wood up, and each one calls for a different response.

So a hollow sound is not a diagnosis. It is a reading that something has changed the wood from the inside, and the inspection works out which of three or four things did it. In a house over a crawl space, the same check is worth making on the sill plate, band board and joists, where the wood is closest to the soil and the moisture.

01

Mud tubes or soil packed into cracks

Termites travel from the soil in covered mud tubes and plug gaps with dirt as they go. Tubes on the foundation or mud pressed into a joint near hollow wood point strongly to termites.

02

Piles of coarse sawdust with insect parts

Carpenter ants push their debris out of the nest, so a small pile of shavings mixed with bits of dead insects below the wood points to ants rather than termites, which leave no sawdust.

03

Blistered or bubbling paint

Feeding and moisture inside a board lift the paint from behind. Paint that ripples or bubbles over trim with no plumbing nearby is a surface sign of what is going on underneath.

04

Doors and windows that stick

Wood that has lost strength or taken on moisture moves. A door that has started to catch, or a window that will not slide, sometimes traces back to a frame or header that is no longer solid.

05

Floors that feel soft or bouncy in places

This is the sign that matters most. If a joist, girder or the subfloor has been hollowed or softened, the floor above gives slightly underfoot, and that turns a surface question into a framing question.

Most Common Causes

What Usually Causes It

Subterranean termite galleries
Termites eat the wood between the grain lines and leave layered, ragged galleries packed with soil and dried mud. The outer shell and paint are usually left in place. Wood near the ground, near a mud tube, or near a plumbing penetration is the most common place to find it.
Carpenter ant galleries
Carpenter ants do not eat wood. They hollow it out to nest, and they prefer wood already softened by moisture. Their galleries are smooth and clean, with no mud, and the sawdust like debris they remove is pushed out through small openings and piles up below.
Wood decay from moisture
Fungus breaks down wood that stays damp. Rotted wood is soft and spongy rather than hollow, often cracks into small cubes as it dries, and crumbles under a screwdriver instead of breaking into a shell. Rot and termites are frequently found together, because both want the same wet wood.
A leak or damp condition behind the wood
A window with a failed seal, a shower pan, a roof leak or a crawl space that never dries can keep a piece of framing wet for years. That moisture is what softens the wood for rot and what draws termites and carpenter ants to it in the first place.
Construction that is hollow by design
Worth ruling out. Hollow core doors, box beams, some trim profiles and any wall backed by drywall sound hollow because they are. The inspection compares the suspect wood against solid wood of the same kind before drawing a conclusion.

Regional Context

Why the Southern Virginia and Northern North Carolina Climate Changes This Work

Generic advice treats every market identically. Humid summers, wooded lots and a great deal of older housing stock give this region a moisture profile that drives both structural damage and pest pressure, which is why our diagnosis starts with where the home sits and how it is built, not just with the symptom you called about.

Humid summers put water under the house

For much of the year the outside air across this region holds more moisture than the air under a crawl space. That inverts the assumption foundation vents were built on. Warm, humid air enters through the vents, meets the cooler surfaces beneath the floor, and condenses on joists, ductwork and insulation. The vents intended to dry the space are wetting it instead.

That single mechanism explains most of what we are called out for. Damp framing softens and decays. Mold establishes and its odor rises into the living space through the floor. Termites, cockroaches and rodents are drawn to exactly those conditions. Treating the insects without addressing the moisture underneath simply resets the clock.

Wooded and lakeside lots hold moisture longer

Around Lake Gaston and across the forested parts of Mecklenburg, Brunswick, Warren and Halifax counties, shade and tree cover keep soil damp well after the surrounding area has dried. Standing water lingers, foundations stay wet longer after rain, and mosquito habitat persists through more of the season. Properties like these frequently need drainage attention before any treatment is worth doing.

Older housing stock, older construction details

Petersburg and Danville in particular carry a great deal of older housing, and age brings construction details that predate current moisture practice: open crawl spaces with bare soil, wood in direct contact with the ground, original drainage that has silted up, and decades of accumulated repairs. An inspection of a house like that has to read the whole system rather than one symptom.

Open the wood a little. Termite damage is hollow and layered, follows the grain, and has dried mud or soil packed into the galleries. Rot is soft and spongy all the way through, has no galleries, often cracks into small cubes as it dries, and crumbles rather than breaking into a shell. The two are often found together, so finding one does not rule out the other.
