How it works

What a Crawl Space Sump Pump with Battery Backup Is and When It Is the Right Call

The sump pump is the working end of a drainage system, and the drainage is what makes it useful. A pump set into wet ground on its own only clears the puddle around it. French drain material laid along the inside of the foundation wall gives water a path of least resistance, so instead of spreading across the crawl space floor it moves toward the basin. From there the pump sends it through a discharge line to a point outside where it cannot soak straight back down to the footing.

In an encapsulation this work comes early. The order is structure first, then water, then insulation, then the barrier. Laying 20 mil poly over standing water hides it, and the water goes on soaking the piers and the ground under the plastic. So if the inspection finds water actively entering, the drain and sump go in before anything is sealed over.

Battery backup is optional in a crawl space, and we will talk it through with you rather than assume. The case for it is simple. The storms that push the most water through a block wall are the same storms that take out power, so a pump with no backup is off during the conditions it exists for. The case against it is cost, on a crawl space that only takes on a little water in a long wet spell.

A sump pump does not fix humidity. A crawl space can be dry underfoot and still condense moisture on ducts and joists all summer, and that is what the barrier, the vent sealing and the dehumidifier handle. It also does not change what is happening outside the house. The inspection looks at gutters, downspouts and the slope of the ground, and if the water problem starts there we will tell you.

Expect the pump to run during and after heavy rain and sit quiet the rest of the time. The basin has a lid, and the pump can be checked during later service visits under the house.

Installation Process

How We Install a Crawl Space Sump Pump with Battery Backup

Step 01

Find where the water enters

The inspection traces the water to its source: through the block wall, up from the low side of the lot, or from a downspout emptying beside the foundation. That decides where the drain runs and whether the fix is even under the house.

Step 02

Lay the French drain material

Along the inside of the foundation, French drain material is set in a trench at the low points where water collects, with fall toward the basin. The material lets water in and carries it while keeping soil out.

Step 03

Set the sump basin and pump

The basin goes at the low point of the crawl space so the drain feeds it by gravity. The pump is sized to the volume the site produces and fitted with a check valve so lifted water does not fall back and cycle the pump.

Step 04

Add battery backup where it makes sense

If you choose backup, a second pump powered by a battery is installed in the same basin and takes over on power loss or if the main pump cannot keep up. The choice is yours and we will explain the tradeoff.

Step 05

Route the discharge outside

The discharge line carries water to a point far enough from the foundation that it cannot soak back down to the footing. A pump that empties beside the house recirculates the same water.

Step 06

Continue the encapsulation

With the water controlled, the wall insulation, 20 mil barrier, vent seals, insulated access door and dehumidifier follow in order. The drain and pump stay accessible for later checks.

Why Rozier

A Local, Family Owned Team in South Hill

Rozier is a family owned, faith-driven company based in South Hill. Because moisture is what invites termites and rodents in the first place, real prevention starts below the surface.

One team, above and below the surface.

We treat the infestation and correct the moisture conditions that caused it, instead of handing you to a second contractor.

Every property evaluated for both pest and moisture problems.

Each home we visit is assessed through a pest lens and a moisture lens, because underneath a house they are the same problem.

Inspection before recommendation.

We do not arrive with a predetermined treatment and a timer running. What we propose follows from what we find.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to Common Questions About Crawl Space Sump Pump With Battery Backup

Don't see your question here? Our team is happy to help. Reach out anytime.

Probably not. Damp means high humidity, condensation and a musty smell, and the barrier, vent sealing and dehumidifier handle that. A sump pump is for a crawl space that takes on water: standing water after rain, tide lines on the piers or ground that never dries. The inspection tells the two apart.
