What this symptom means

Small Flies Near Drains: Diagnosed and Explained

Small flies hover around the bathroom sink, rest on the shower wall or sit on the tile near a floor drain in the basement or laundry room. They are slow, they do not seem to go anywhere, and swatting them changes nothing because more are there the next morning. Up close they are fuzzy, gray or dark, with wings held flat over the body like a tiny moth.

Those are drain flies, sometimes called moth flies or sewer flies. They breed in the organic film that coats the inside of drain lines, overflows and traps: hair, soap, grease and bacteria. The larvae live in that film and feed on it. The adults have hatched from it and rarely fly more than a few feet from where they emerged. A drain used every day is flushed often enough to limit the buildup. An idle drain, or one with a slow leak under the floor, is where the film thickens and the flies multiply.

Other small flies get mistaken for them. Fruit flies are tan with red eyes and gather around ripe produce and recycling. Fungus gnats are slender and dark and come from the damp soil of houseplants. Phorid flies hump their backs and often point to a broken drain line or a wet, decaying spot under a slab or in a crawl space. Which fly you have decides where to look, and the answer is almost never the air.

What Usually Shows Up With It

01

Flies resting on walls near the drain rather than flying around

Drain flies are weak fliers and sit on the tile, the mirror or the shower wall close to their source. Fruit flies, by contrast, hover around food and are quick.

02

A slow draining sink or a musty smell from the pipe

A drain that gurgles, drains slowly or smells of sewer gas is carrying a heavy film or a partial blockage. That is the material the larvae feed on.

03

Flies in a bathroom nobody uses

A guest bath or basement bathroom that sits idle is the classic drain fly source. A dry trap and thick film in a pipe that is never flushed make the ideal breeding spot.

04

Worm like larvae when the drain is opened

Pulling a drain cover or the stopper and finding small, pale, worm like larvae in the slime confirms the drain is the breeding site. They are harmless to handle and are the surest evidence.

05

Damp spots, soft flooring or odors near a slab or crawl space

Small flies together with a damp floor, a musty smell or soft flooring near a bathroom or kitchen point to a leaking line below. The flies are the visible symptom of a moisture problem.

Most Common Causes

What Usually Causes It

Organic film inside a drain line
Every drain builds up a slimy layer of hair, soap, grease and bacteria on the pipe wall. Drain fly larvae live in that layer and feed on it, so the flies hatch straight out of the pipe. Bathroom sink overflows, shower drains and floor drains are the usual sources.
A drain that is rarely used
A guest bathroom, a basement floor drain or a utility sink that goes weeks without water lets the film thicken and the trap dry out. Idle drains are the most common source we find, because nothing is flushing the larvae away.
A leak or a broken line under the floor
Water leaking from a drain line under a slab or into a crawl space soaks the ground and the organic material there, creating a breeding site nobody can see. Phorid flies in particular point to this, and it is a plumbing problem as much as a pest problem.
Fruit flies or fungus gnats mistaken for drain flies
Fruit flies breed in overripe produce, the bottom of a trash can, a recycling bin or a spilled drink under an appliance. Fungus gnats breed in the constantly damp soil of overwatered houseplants. Both are found near drains sometimes but are not coming from them.
Damp organic material under or around the house
Decaying leaves against the foundation, a damp crawl space with organic debris, or a sump that holds stagnant water can breed small flies that make their way inside. On the wooded and lakeside lots common here, that outdoor source is worth ruling out.

Regional Context

Why the Southern Virginia and Northern North Carolina Climate Changes This Work

Generic advice treats every market identically. Humid summers, wooded lots and a great deal of older housing stock give this region a moisture profile that drives both structural damage and pest pressure, which is why our diagnosis starts with where the home sits and how it is built, not just with the symptom you called about.

Humid summers put water under the house

For much of the year the outside air across this region holds more moisture than the air under a crawl space. That inverts the assumption foundation vents were built on. Warm, humid air enters through the vents, meets the cooler surfaces beneath the floor, and condenses on joists, ductwork and insulation. The vents intended to dry the space are wetting it instead.

That single mechanism explains most of what we are called out for. Damp framing softens and decays. Mold establishes and its odor rises into the living space through the floor. Termites, cockroaches and rodents are drawn to exactly those conditions. Treating the insects without addressing the moisture underneath simply resets the clock.

Wooded and lakeside lots hold moisture longer

Around Lake Gaston and across the forested parts of Mecklenburg, Brunswick, Warren and Halifax counties, shade and tree cover keep soil damp well after the surrounding area has dried. Standing water lingers, foundations stay wet longer after rain, and mosquito habitat persists through more of the season. Properties like these frequently need drainage attention before any treatment is worth doing.

Older housing stock, older construction details

Petersburg and Danville in particular carry a great deal of older housing, and age brings construction details that predate current moisture practice: open crawl spaces with bare soil, wood in direct contact with the ground, original drainage that has silted up, and decades of accumulated repairs. An inspection of a house like that has to read the whole system rather than one symptom.

Answers to Common Questions About Small Flies Near Drains

Because the breeding site is inside the pipe, below the stopper and inside the overflow, where a wipe down does not reach. The film on the pipe wall holds the larvae, and new adults hatch from it every day. Until that film is cleaned out and the line treated, the flies keep coming.
