Signs of Fleas and Ticks

How do you know if you have fleas? Most often the pet tells you. An animal that is scratching more than usual, biting at the base of the tail, or losing patches of fur is the first sign in most homes. Part the fur along the belly, the inner thighs and just in front of the tail. Fleas are small, dark and fast, and they move away from the light as the fur opens. You may see the flea itself or you may see flea dirt, which is the more reliable clue.

Flea dirt looks like fine black pepper in the fur or on pet bedding. It is digested blood. Brush some onto a damp white paper towel and it will turn reddish brown. That test settles the question in a minute and separates flea dirt from ordinary soil. In the house, bites around your own ankles and lower legs, especially after sitting on the floor or the couch, point the same way. Some people notice fleas hopping onto light colored socks when they walk across carpet, and a home that has been empty for a while can produce a wave of hungry fleas when someone returns.

Ticks are found differently, because they do not live in the house. Ticks wait on grass and low vegetation at the edges of a property and climb onto whatever brushes past. The sign is a tick on a person or a pet after time outdoors, most often around the hairline, behind the ears, in the armpits, at the waistband and behind the knees. On a pet they gather around the head, neck, ears and between the toes. An engorged tick, swollen gray and about the size of a pea, has been attached for a day or more.

The yard itself gives clues. Ticks concentrate in tall grass, leaf litter, brush and the shaded line where lawn meets woods. Repeated ticks on pets that stay near the house suggest the margins are close to the areas in use. A simple check is to drag a white towel slowly across the edge of the lawn and look at what climbs onto it. In our region, wooded and lakeside lots that stay damp through the summer carry the heaviest tick pressure.

A few things get confused with fleas. Springtails and small beetles jump or scurry in carpet but do not bite. Bed bug bites land on the upper body during sleep rather than at the ankles. If you are unsure, catch a specimen on tape or in a sealed bag and ask. An inspection is free and will confirm what is present before anything is treated.

Regional Context

Why the Southern Virginia and Northern North Carolina Climate Changes This Work

Generic advice treats every market identically. Humid summers, wooded lots and a great deal of older housing stock give this region a moisture profile that drives both structural damage and pest pressure, which is why our diagnosis starts with where the home sits and how it is built, not just with the symptom you called about.

Humid summers put water under the house

For much of the year the outside air across this region holds more moisture than the air under a crawl space. That inverts the assumption foundation vents were built on. Warm, humid air enters through the vents, meets the cooler surfaces beneath the floor, and condenses on joists, ductwork and insulation. The vents intended to dry the space are wetting it instead.

That single mechanism explains most of what we are called out for. Damp framing softens and decays. Mold establishes and its odor rises into the living space through the floor. Termites, cockroaches and rodents are drawn to exactly those conditions. Treating the insects without addressing the moisture underneath simply resets the clock.

Wooded and lakeside lots hold moisture longer

Around Lake Gaston and across the forested parts of Mecklenburg, Brunswick, Warren and Halifax counties, shade and tree cover keep soil damp well after the surrounding area has dried. Standing water lingers, foundations stay wet longer after rain, and mosquito habitat persists through more of the season. Properties like these frequently need drainage attention before any treatment is worth doing.

Older housing stock, older construction details

Petersburg and Danville in particular carry a great deal of older housing, and age brings construction details that predate current moisture practice: open crawl spaces with bare soil, wood in direct contact with the ground, original drainage that has silted up, and decades of accumulated repairs. An inspection of a house like that has to read the whole system rather than one symptom.

Answers to Common Questions About Signs of Fleas and Ticks

Don't see your question here? Our team is happy to help. Reach out anytime.

Yes. Fleas come in on clothing, on wildlife or stray animals under a house, or with a previous occupant's pets, and pupae can wait weeks in an empty home until someone arrives. Bites around the ankles in a home with no animals are worth taking seriously.
