Bed Bugs vs Fleas

Small red itchy bites, and no clear idea what caused them. Bed bugs and fleas are the two pests most often blamed, and they are treated in very different ways, so getting the identification right saves a wasted service. The good news is that the two leave different clues, and most homes can narrow it down before the inspection confirms it.

Start with where the bites land. Flea bites cluster around the ankles, lower legs and feet, because fleas jump from carpet and bedding to whatever passes and rarely climb much higher on a standing person. They also bite where clothing is tight, such as sock lines and waistbands. Bed bug bites appear on skin uncovered during sleep: arms, shoulders, neck, face and hands. They often run in a rough line of three or more, and they happen at night in bed rather than while you are up and moving.

Next, the insects themselves. A flea is tiny, dark brown, and built to jump. It is about the size of a sesame seed, narrow from side to side, and disappears in a flash when disturbed. You are most likely to see one on a pet's belly or in the fur near the tail, or hopping in carpet. A bed bug is flat, oval, reddish brown and about the size of an apple seed. It does not jump or fly. It walks, and it hides in mattress seams, the box spring and the joints of the bed frame during the day.

Then the evidence. Fleas leave flea dirt, tiny black specks of digested blood that turn red when wetted, in pet bedding and fur. Bed bugs leave dark fecal spots along mattress seams and behind the headboard, plus pale cast skins and pinhead sized white eggs glued into seams. A pet that is scratching tips the odds toward fleas. A home with no animals and bites that arrive overnight tips them toward bed bugs, though fleas do live in homes without pets, especially after a previous occupant's animals or from wildlife sheltering under the house.

Why it matters. Flea treatment works on the carpet, pet bedding and floor edges indoors, with the pet treated by a veterinarian at the same time and daily vacuuming for seven days afterward. Bed bug treatment is a liquid chemical treatment of the whole home on the first visit and then the active areas on follow up visits, with the bed and its surroundings as the focus. Booking one for the other wastes money and leaves the real problem building. A free inspection confirms which one you have, and if it turns out to be neither, you will hear that too.

How We Treat It

Bed Bug Treatment Methods We Use

We choose the treatment method based on what we find during the inspection and the type of pest problem on the property.

Regional Context

Why the Southern Virginia and Northern North Carolina Climate Changes This Work

Generic advice treats every market identically. Humid summers, wooded lots and a great deal of older housing stock give this region a moisture profile that drives both structural damage and pest pressure, which is why our diagnosis starts with where the home sits and how it is built, not just with the symptom you called about.

Humid summers put water under the house

For much of the year the outside air across this region holds more moisture than the air under a crawl space. That inverts the assumption foundation vents were built on. Warm, humid air enters through the vents, meets the cooler surfaces beneath the floor, and condenses on joists, ductwork and insulation. The vents intended to dry the space are wetting it instead.

That single mechanism explains most of what we are called out for. Damp framing softens and decays. Mold establishes and its odor rises into the living space through the floor. Termites, cockroaches and rodents are drawn to exactly those conditions. Treating the insects without addressing the moisture underneath simply resets the clock.

Wooded and lakeside lots hold moisture longer

Around Lake Gaston and across the forested parts of Mecklenburg, Brunswick, Warren and Halifax counties, shade and tree cover keep soil damp well after the surrounding area has dried. Standing water lingers, foundations stay wet longer after rain, and mosquito habitat persists through more of the season. Properties like these frequently need drainage attention before any treatment is worth doing.

Older housing stock, older construction details

Petersburg and Danville in particular carry a great deal of older housing, and age brings construction details that predate current moisture practice: open crawl spaces with bare soil, wood in direct contact with the ground, original drainage that has silted up, and decades of accumulated repairs. An inspection of a house like that has to read the whole system rather than one symptom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to Common Questions About Bed Bugs vs Fleas

Don't see your question here? Our team is happy to help. Reach out anytime.

Yes, though it is uncommon. A home with pets and a recent trip or a piece of second hand furniture could pick up both. The inspection looks at the bed and the pet areas separately so neither is missed.
