A house centipede is hunting something. Finding out what is where the work begins.
What is the yellowish, many legged thing that shot across the bathroom floor faster than anything that size should move? That was a house centipede. It is about an inch to an inch and a half long, yellowish gray with three dark stripes down the back, and it carries fifteen pairs of very long, banded legs that give it the look of a moving fringe. It is among the fastest arthropods you will see indoors, and it startles people out of all proportion to what it can do.
House centipedes are predators, and that is the useful thing to know about them. They eat silverfish, cockroach nymphs, carpet beetle larvae, spiders, ants, flies and other small insects, hunting at night and resting by day in cracks, drains, under sinks and in damp corners of basements, crawl spaces and bathrooms. Unlike most centipedes, this species lives its whole life indoors and can be found year round. It needs humidity, because it dries out quickly, and it needs prey.
So a house centipede is a message with two parts. There is enough moisture in the house for it to live, and there are enough other insects for it to eat. One centipede in a basement means little. Regular sightings mean the conditions that support a food chain are present, and the insects it is eating are the ones worth asking about.
They are not a concern to people. A house centipede can bite if handled, and the bite is comparable to a mild bee sting, but they run rather than confront and bites are very rare. They do not damage the house, food or belongings, and they do not carry disease. Most people still do not want them in the bathroom, which is fair, and that is where we come in.
Our approach treats the cause. The inspection follows the moisture and the prey: the crawl space, the basement, under sinks, floor drains, bathrooms, and wherever silverfish, camel crickets or other small insects are established. The technician treats the harborage and the entry points and applies a perimeter treatment, which lowers both the centipedes and the insects that were feeding them. Because we do the crawl space and moisture work as well, we can tell you when the honest fix is a drier house.
Reducing humidity is what changes the picture over the long term. Fixing leaks, running exhaust fans, drying the crawl space and sealing gaps at the foundation remove both the water and the prey that house centipedes need. House centipede coverage is part of the pest prevention program, and the population is held at the lowest practical level.
We choose the treatment method based on what we find during the inspection and the type of pest problem on the property.
A precise aerosol injection along baseboards, door frames and kitchen gaps, not a fog.
A residual application along the basement and garage perimeter, where moisture pests collect.
Camel crickets, millipedes and earwigs come in through openings you can close.
Generic advice treats every market identically. Humid summers, wooded lots and a great deal of older housing stock give this region a moisture profile that drives both structural damage and pest pressure, which is why our diagnosis starts with where the home sits and how it is built, not just with the symptom you called about.
For much of the year the outside air across this region holds more moisture than the air under a crawl space. That inverts the assumption foundation vents were built on. Warm, humid air enters through the vents, meets the cooler surfaces beneath the floor, and condenses on joists, ductwork and insulation. The vents intended to dry the space are wetting it instead.
That single mechanism explains most of what we are called out for. Damp framing softens and decays. Mold establishes and its odor rises into the living space through the floor. Termites, cockroaches and rodents are drawn to exactly those conditions. Treating the insects without addressing the moisture underneath simply resets the clock.
Around Lake Gaston and across the forested parts of Mecklenburg, Brunswick, Warren and Halifax counties, shade and tree cover keep soil damp well after the surrounding area has dried. Standing water lingers, foundations stay wet longer after rain, and mosquito habitat persists through more of the season. Properties like these frequently need drainage attention before any treatment is worth doing.
Petersburg and Danville in particular carry a great deal of older housing, and age brings construction details that predate current moisture practice: open crawl spaces with bare soil, wood in direct contact with the ground, original drainage that has silted up, and decades of accumulated repairs. An inspection of a house like that has to read the whole system rather than one symptom.
The signs below are the most common pest and moisture indicators we see in homes in our region. Any of them is worth having looked at during an inspection.
Our specialists evaluate the underlying cause before recommending any work. Inspections are at no cost and there's no obligation to proceed.
Rozier is a family owned, faith-driven company based in South Hill. Because moisture is what invites termites and rodents in the first place, real prevention starts below the surface.
We treat the infestation and correct the moisture conditions that caused it, instead of handing you to a second contractor.
Each home we visit is assessed through a pest lens and a moisture lens, because underneath a house they are the same problem.
We do not arrive with a predetermined treatment and a timer running. What we propose follows from what we find.
Children, pets and sensitive family members are part of the decision about what gets used and how it is applied.

Every home is different, so the cost depends on what we find during the inspection. We provide a written estimate based on the scope of work, access, and site conditions.
Pricing depends on the size of the property, the extent of the problem, and how easy the area is to access.
If the inspection points to a different problem or a simpler solution, we’ll explain that and recommend the appropriate next step.
We put the scope and price in writing before work starts, so you know what has been recommended and what it will cost.
